Sometimes old fashioned manual power works best

Earlier this week at the library we discovered the kitchen sink. which had been running in spite of having drain cleaner applied to it on several occasions, decided not to take down even water. Water just sat in it and would not go down.

Being rather frustrated with the whole thing, we got the plunger from the bathroom (eeeyu I know, but we were desperate). While one of us made sure one half the double sink was thoroughly stoppered, the other plunged away at the offending side. After several tries, the water ran down so fast it made a whirlpool! It has been running just fine ever since! Then all we had to do was clean the sink. No problem.

Yeah manual power!

Not Quite Spring Cleaning

It didn't snow today, but we did have to shovel this morning.

It's funny how a project of transferring wrapping paper from a too-small cardboard box to a newly bought plastic box with lid can turn into an afternoon's major closet-cleaning session!

The box we bought was a bit larger than the one we were replacing because it was overflowing. That was fine EXCEPT it had to be turned sideways on the closet shelf and there wasn't any more room on the shelf in that direction. So, that meant taking everything off that shelf & hopefully throwing away a lot of it after sorting through it. Then, while I was at it, I tackled the shelf below & the one below that too. By late afternoon, when Gordon got home, there was "stuff," both stuff to keep & stuff to toss, all over the bedroom floor. When we finally got all sorted out, we ended up with a box of recycled paper, a half-full trash bag, and 3 kitchen trash bag sized bags full of sheets, etc to take to the St. Vincent de Paul Society drop box at the Fire Hall (it's like GoodWill). We now have gift wrap in the box with a lit, a bag of gift-bags beside it & the long rolls of gift wrap on a little half-shelf above the box. Looks very neat. We also sorted through a number of sheets & those we didn't give away, we also sorted. The single bed sheets went into the closet in Kim's room, the double sheets went at one end of a closet shelf. Our travel bags are at the other end. The closet looks very nice now, with some open space on the shelves. Of course, I still have to sort the lowest shelf which has shoe & other small boxes, etc, but that's for another day.

Some finds were made too. One very unexpected one was my mother's high school diploma from West Phila High School for Girls. I don't ever remember seeing it before, maybe because it was folded up under something else. It is huge -- somewhere around 18" x 24." We will have to find something to frame it in or some way to preserve it. I also found my parents marriage certificate, my father's "non-birth certificate." That's because his birth certificate was lost & apparently not registered. There was a paper with it that was from an insurance policy which is what he used to prove his birth. Then in some old pictures I found a photo of my family's Japanese sculptor friend, Hoke. It's an 8 x 10" so I want to frame that also. His real name was Yoshimatsu Onaga. He died in October 1955. I remember him well.

So, after a very busy afternoon, we went out for a relaxing dinner. Now some reading & then to bed.
